Description

IBM Websphere v8

WebSphere provides software for SOA environments that enables dynamic, interconnected business processes, and delivers highly effective application infrastructures for all business situations. WebSphere is IBM's application and integration software platform, and includes the entire middleware infrastructure, including servers, services, and tools, needed to create, deploy, run, and monitor round-the-clock, enterprise-wide web applications and cross-platform, cross-product solutions.

IBM DB2 Express v9

IBM DB2 is a relational model database server developed by IBM. It primarily runs on Unix (namely AIX), Linux, IBM i (formerly OS/400), z/OS and Windows servers. DB2 also powers the different IBM InfoSphere Warehouse editions.

DB2 for Windows, Linux and Unix has three separate editions: Express Edition, Workgroup Server Edition, and Enterprise Server Edition,

The DB2 Express-C is a no-charge version of DB2, however, DB2 Express-C is based on the same code as the other DB2 version for Linux, Unix and Windows editions and is not open source. DB2 Express-C has no limit on number of users or on database size. DB2 Express-C runs on 32 and 64bit Windows, Linux on x86, x64 and POWER processors, Solaris on x64 CPU and Intel machines running Mac OS X. Support is provided on a free, public Web forum.

DayTrader EE6

DayTrader is an Apache-Geronimo TM end-to-end benchmark and performance sample application. It provides a workload for characterizing performance of the Geronimo J2EE Application Server. The workload consists of an end to end web application and a full set of primitives. The application is a collection of Java classes, Java Servlets, Java Server Pages, Web Services, and Enterprise Java Beans built to open J2EE APIs. This provides a real world workload driving Geronimo's implementation of J2EE and Web Services including key Geronimo performance components and features.

DayTrader was built around the paradigm of an online stock trading system. Originally developed by IBM as the Trade Performance Benchmark Sample, DayTrader was donated to the Apache Geronimo community in 2005. The application allows users to login, view their portfolio, lookup stock quotes, and buy or sell stock shares. With the aid of a Web-based load driver such as Mercury LoadRunner, Rational Performance Tester, or Apache JMeter, the real-world workload provided by DayTrader can be used to measure and compare the performance of Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) application servers offered by a variety of vendors. In addition to the full workload, the application also contains a set of primitives used for functional and performance testing of various Java EE components and common design patterns.

Creation Overview

In order to create a stack of shareable VAAs using the snapshot method, use the following approach:

  1. Install OS
  2. Create base system snapshot
  3. Install, configure and run IBM Websphere
  4. Create IBM Websphere VAA using system snapshot from #2 above
  5. Create a new system snapshot
  6. Install, configure and run IBM DB2
  7. Create IBM DB2 VAA using system snapshot from #5 above
  8. Create a new system snapshot
  9. Install, configure and run setup for the DayTrader application
  10. Create DayTrader VAA using system snapshot from #8 above
  11. Compress all VAAs, move then to the target, uncompress the VAAs and run them
